01-04-10 - Detroit to be Electric!

January 2010 -

At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month, the Volvo stand will feature the C30 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) as an example of Volvo Car Corp.’s ambitious electrification strategy.

The C30 BEV has a range of up to 150 kilometers, and work is underway to evaluate the viability of retailing an entirely electric-powered car. “A small group of media were able to drive this car in Sweden a couple of months ago,” said Doug Speck, VCNA’s president and CEO. “Their reaction was very positive, and I think U.S. consumers will react favorably when they see it.”

The C30 BEV is powered with a Lithium-Ion battery that is charged via a regular power socket found in most homes. The battery is, in fact, manufactured by EnerDel in Indianapolis. Shortly after the Detroit show, the car will be part of a technology briefing for national media at the manufacturer’s facility.

01-04-10 - Four Volvo Models Named 2010 'Top Safety Pick' by IIHS

The XC60, XC90, S80 and C30 have been named Top Safety

Picks for 2010 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

(IIHS). Making the four awards even more notable is that, for the

first time, good performance in a roof strength test to measure

protection in a rollover is required to win.

“This is yet another example of living our core values,” said

Doug Speck, VCNA president and CEO. “Lots of people in our

company work hard to design and build the safest cars on the

road, and these awards are a result of their effort.”

IIHS recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people

in front, side, rear and now rollover crashes based on good

ratings in IIHS tests. Winners also must have electronic stability

control, which research shows significantly reduces crash risk.

“With the addition of our new roof strength evaluation, our crash

test results now cover all four of the most common kinds of

crashes,” said IIHS President Adrian Lund. “Cars and SUVs that

win Top Safety Pick are designs that go far beyond minimum

federal safety standards.”

Not a single model from Toyota, Lexus or Scion was among this

year’s winners – after having 11 winners in 2009. Four other

manufacturers whose vehicles have earned Top Safety Pick in

the past didn’t have a qualifying vehicle for 2010: BMW, Mazda,

Mitsubishi and Saab. The Honda Accord picked up the award the

past two years but the 2010 didn’t earn the required good roof

strength rating to qualify.

12-22-09 - Volvo XC60 Wins Prestigious 2010 International Truck of the Year Award

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 2, 2009) – The Volvo XC60 was named 2010 International Truck of the Year today by the International Car of they Year (ICOTY) jury. The award was given to Doug Speck, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, LLC at the Volvo display at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. The XC60 was chosen over 10 new crossovers, SUVs and trucks by a distinguished panel of top automotive journalists.

"This ties a very pretty bow around what's been a truly amazing year for Volvo," commented Speck. "The XC60 has not only been recognized by the media but it's been extremely well received by our customers." The 2010 XC60 has helped VCNA earn six consecutive months of year-over-year sales increases since June.

The XC60 was chosen the winner from a panel of 19 automotive media from around the U.S. and Canada representing top newspapers, magazines and websites. The jurors must consider the ICOTY mission of "honoring vehicles that reflect an emotional connection between car and consumer lifestyles" when making their nominations. "The ICOTY awards are not centered on power and performance," said Courtney Caldwell, ICOTY’s creator and executive producer. "It's about how cars reflect our personalities, lifestyles and self image, an attitude most consumers identify with."

Once approved by the ICOTY nominating committee, the awards jury then bases their decision on a number of important criteria: The vehicle must be new or substantially revised, it must be offered for sale to the general public by the judging deadline of November 16, 2009, and may not have been previously considered for the ICOTY Awards.

The International Truck of the Year award marks the 20th accolade the Volvo XC60 has received since sales began in Europe in late 2008. The XC60 is the first vehicle to offer City Safety as standard equipment. This unique Volvo technology can help the driver avoid frontal collisions at low speed. If the driver is about to drive into the rear of a vehicle and does not react in time, the XC60 will apply the brakes by itself.

About ICOTY: The ICOTY Awards were founded and launched in 1997 by Courtney Caldwell, editor-in-chief of Road & Travel Magazine. The mission of the ICOTY Awards is to shed light on the emotional connection between cars and consumers. Awards are presented to automakers that most successfully achieve that goal through the design and marketing of their vehicles, and how well those vehicles reflect consumer lifestyles.

07-23-09 - Volvo C30 Earns Top Safety Pick From IIHS

Volvo C30 Earns Top Safety Pick From IIHS

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), crash tests demonstrate that occupant protection in all kinds of vehicles is improving. However, IIHS doesn't routinely test vehicles in every size/type category. Emphasizing vehicles for family use, the Institute usually crash tests 4-door models. To evaluate the extent to which automakers are extending crashworthiness improvements to 2-door cars, the Institute recently conducted front, side, and rear tests of 2009 coupes including the Chevrolet Cobalt, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, and Scion tC, all small models, plus the midsize Volvo C30.

The Volvo C30 and the Ford Focus are best in group of 5: Earning good ratings in all 3 of the Institute's tests and equipped with optional electronic stability control, the Focus qualifies as a 2009 Top Safety Pick among small cars. Also earning this award is the midsize Volvo C30. Seven small cars and 10 midsize moderately priced models now earn the award, the Institute's top safety designation. The list of winners makes it easier for consumers to zero in on vehicles in each class that afford the best overall crash protection!
